Zion homes and what people clear out
Zion's housing is older than most of Lake County. Census estimates put the median year built at 1971, and about 49% of homes were built before 1970. About 58% of homes are owner-occupied and 42% are rented, and most are single-family houses. That points to basement and garage cleanouts in older houses, estate cleanouts, and move-outs between tenants.
What city pickup covers
The City of Zion contracts with Waste Management. Bulky items such as furniture go out with regular trash, but trucks usually run with one driver, so items need to be set out a little at a time and be light enough for one person. Carpet must be bundled in pieces no longer than four feet and no heavier than 50 pounds.
For a large pile of debris, the city requires a special pickup, prepaid at City Hall, and lists a minimum of $500 a load. For a cleanout, compare that with a written estimate from a junk removal crew, which usually includes the carrying and loading.
Hazardous items
Most crews will not take paint, solvents or chemicals. Check SWALCO for Lake County household chemical waste collection.
How the referral works
Tell us what needs to go by form or phone. We pass it to one independent crew that serves Zion, and they contact you to confirm a price. We are a referral service, not a hauler, and the referral is free.
